In a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, the education
system has taken a big hit. A few days back Google had announced a 10 billion
dollar investment to digitize India in various. After the Jio investment of
Google, now Google has made a huge investment by providing their G Suite for
Education to Maharashtra. Almost 1 lakh schools across Maharashtra and connect
23 million students via this G Suite for education.
Also, Maharashtra is the worst affected state in terms
of COVID-19, thereby making all teachers and students a great hit and suffer a lot
in education. Making classes online has been a great step by continuing the classes.
There are many software's for connecting people online but not suitable for education.
G Suite for Education allows both teachers and
students to interact in the same way as in a school or a college. Google is giving
it for free as a part of their Digitization of India scheme announced by Sundar
Pichai a few days back.
“All of us had questions regarding the future of education. We have come to a step closer
to answer these questions due to the pandemic,” said Uddhav Thackeray, Chief
Minister of Maharashtra, in a statement.
Varsha
Gaikwad, the education minister of Maharashtra, said the partnership with
Google will help her department roll out tech solutions to students in about
190,000 schools.
“Our
goal is to make Maharashtra the most progressive state in education by making
effective use of online resources, platforms, bandwidth, and technology, using
the power of the internet to reach out to the masses and bridge the gap in
education,” she said.
Also, there are
many other players in this education market like Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu,
Toppr, etc. but they cost a lot of money and can’t be afforded by a common
Indian citizen.
Google is providing
students and teachers with a range of services, including G Suite for
Education, Google Forms for conducting quizzes and tests, access to Google Meet
video conferencing services and Google Classroom, which enables educators to
create, review and organize assignments, as well as communicate directly with
students.
“Our teachers and
schools have a huge responsibility in shaping the future of our new
generation and we continue to be honored to play a role in offering digital
tools that can enable more teachers to help even more students stay firmly on
their journey of learning, during these times and beyond,” wrote Sanjay Gupta,
country head and vice president of Google India, in a blog post.
