Face recognition algorithm codes unable to detect faces due to face masks

The world is stunned after the coronavirus pandemic and wearing face masks has become a part of this pandemic and it is obvious that wearing face masks is the new routine of the human race. Every one of us is using smartphones and after the technology has updated so much, we are used to face lock on our phones.

Wearing face masks has increased the error percentage of face detection in most of the smartphones and computers from 5% to 50% due to the coverage of face and nose, a study by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has found. It is also found that Black masks are causing more errors than blue masks.

Face recognition is different in each brand, for eg: if we take Apple’s face recognition algorithm, they take the users to face with a 9 point depth-sensing technology whereas some cheaper smartphone brands just use camera picture to unlock which is not reliable for security purposes.

With the use of face masks, companies are working on better depth sensing and face-recognizing technology to recognize faces, and also iris technology might break out in all brands due to this algorithm issue. At the end of the day, coding and software are just man-made. Not all methods we use for a luxurious and secure lifestyle are safe for every situation.
