Instagram pays $6000 for finding a bug in its application

Instagram was started in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Kreiger. Facebook bought Instagram in the year 2012 for $1 Billion. Later that Instagram introduced many features to enhance the user experience. Whenever someone deletes their photos, videos, chats, they are deleted for the user but stays in the Instagram server for about 90 days as a safety precaution. Also, story archives are present in their servers as long as possible unless we delete them.

According to a report by Tech Crunch, Instagram regularly conducts bug bounty programs to find bugs in their application and many bugs have been found in the past as well which is normal. Earlier in 2019, Instagram conducted a bug bounty program through which a security researcher Soughat Pokharel found a bug that reportedly states that photos, videos, chats, stories that were deleted by himself a year ago is still present in Instagram’s server.

Soughat Pokharel came to know about this when he downloaded his data of Instagram from “Instagram’s data download tool” and came to know that the  private messages that were deleted by him a year ago and are still staying in their servers. He reported this to Instagram and Instagram rewarded him by giving $6000.

There was no sign of data threat or data transfers in their servers as many companies do so. Instagram fixed the bug as soon as they came to know about the issue. Users across the globe need not worry about data privacy.
